Backend Engineer

Remote Contract Engineering

Design and run the services, APIs, and data layers behind client platforms, in whichever of TypeScript, Python, or Go the job actually calls for.

  • TypeScript
  • Python
  • Go
  • Postgres
  • Docker
  • AWS / GCP
[ 01 ] — The Role

We pick the language per workload rather than per resume. TypeScript carries most of our API and integration surface, Python runs the data and agent work, and Go handles the paths that have to stay fast under sustained load. A lot of engagements touch all three.

This is a backend seat, not a full stack one. You own the service layer, the data model, and the contracts other systems depend on. If you have strong opinions about schema design and no interest in CSS, this is the right role.

[ 02 ] — You will
01

Design the service layer

  • Build and own production services across TypeScript, Python, and Go, choosing between them on the characteristics of the workload rather than habit
  • Design API contracts (REST, GraphQL, or gRPC) that stay stable as consumers multiply, and version them properly when they cannot
  • Model data in Postgres with real attention to indexes, query plans, and migrations that run safely against a live table
02

Make systems talk to each other

  • Build the integration layer between commerce platforms, ERPs, and internal services, where idempotency and retries are most of the work
  • Design event driven flows on queues and message buses, including dead letter handling and replay that has actually been exercised
  • Write the reconciliation logic that keeps two systems of record agreeing, and the alerting that fires when they stop
03

Operate what you build

  • Instrument services with structured logging, metrics, and tracing before they reach production rather than after the first incident
  • Containerize and deploy to Cloud Run, Fargate, or Kubernetes, and keep the path something a teammate can follow without you
  • Diagnose production problems across language boundaries and fix the cause rather than the symptom
[ 03 ] — What you bring

Required

  • Five or more years building backend services in production, with real depth in at least two of TypeScript, Python, and Go
  • Strong relational data modeling and SQL. You can read a query plan and act on it
  • Experience with asynchronous and concurrent work: queues, background jobs, and the failure modes that come with them
  • You have integrated third party APIs that were poorly documented or unreliable and made the result dependable anyway
  • Comfortable deploying and operating your own services on AWS or GCP

Helpful, not required

  • Experience with agentic AI systems or LLM backed services in production
  • Commerce or ERP integration background: Shopify, Salesforce Commerce Cloud, NetSuite, or QuickBooks
  • Infrastructure as code with Terraform, and comfort owning a deployment pipeline end to end
