A model can ace reasoning benchmarks and still ignore the sentence in your prompt that says respond in exactly three bullet points with no commas. IFEval measures only that: does the model do what it was literally told, on instructions a script can verify. That is the skill that decides whether your output survives a parser or breaks a pipeline. We ran Gemini 3.5 Pro and GPT-5.6 Sol through strict and loose IFEval and the gap is not about intelligence, it is about obedience under constraint.
Jul 20, 2026 / AI Engineering Two GGUF files at the same bit width and the same file size can behave very differently, and the reason is often whether an importance matrix guided the quantization. imatrix does not shrink the model or speed it up. It spends the error budget more carefully, protecting the weights a calibration corpus proves matter most. We ran calibrated and plain quants of the same model on a 64GB M5 Max and measured perplexity, KL divergence against the full precision logits, and where the calibration step is worth running versus where it buys you nothing.

A headless storefront is not one API, it is a dozen. Shopify for cart and checkout, a search engine for the catalog, a CMS for content, plus reviews, inventory, and loyalty. The gateway layer decides whether the frontend sees that mess or a single clean graph. Apollo Federation, Hasura, and WunderGraph Cosmo each solve it with a different model, and the pricing and operational profiles are as different as the architectures. Here is how to choose, and when to skip the gateway.
Jul 19, 2026 / AI Engineering Local transcription on Apple Silicon is not one problem with one answer. Whisper large-v3 and NVIDIA Parakeet solve it with opposite architectures, and the difference decides whether you get streaming captions or accurate multilingual batch transcripts. Whisper is an autoregressive decoder that reads a full 30 second window and is strong across 99 languages. Parakeet is a transducer that emits tokens as audio arrives and posts a lower word error rate on clean English at a fraction of the compute. We ran both on a 64GB M5 Max under MLX and mapped where each one wins.

Python coding benchmarks tell you which model refactors a backend well. They tell you nothing about which one can look at a screenshot of a broken chart, read the bug report, and fix the JavaScript that renders it. SWE-Bench Multimodal measures exactly that across seventeen real frontend libraries, and it is the benchmark where strong Python coders fall down. We ran Claude Opus 4.8 and GPT-5.6 Sol through it and the gap is about visual grounding, not raw coding skill.

When a brand goes headless, the product feed problem gets harder, not easier. The storefront is no longer the clean source of product truth, so the feed platform has to pull from a PIM, an ERP, or a data warehouse and reconcile transformations that live in several places. Feedonomics, Channable, and GoDataFeed answer that from three different postures: a managed service that does the work for you, a self serve platform built for scale and marketplaces, and a transparent low cost tool you drive yourself. The right one depends on where your product data lives and who owns the transformations.

Coding benchmarks tell you which model writes better functions. They tell you almost nothing about which model can run an agent that talks to a customer, obeys a refund policy, and calls the right API in the right order without breaking the database. tau-bench measures exactly that, and it scores on the final world state rather than the transcript. We ran Grok 4.5 and Gemini 3.5 Pro through its retail and airline domains and the interesting gap is not the pass rate, it is the consistency.
Jul 18, 2026 / AI Engineering Mixture of Experts models are sold on the active parameter count. A 109B model that only fires 17B parameters per token sounds like it should run in the memory a 17B dense model needs. It does not. Every expert has to be resident because any token can route to any expert, so total parameters set the memory floor while active parameters set the speed. We measured both on a 64GB M5 Max, and the gap between the two numbers is exactly where teams size the machine wrong and end up swapping.
Jul 14, 2026 / AI Engineering ARC-AGI-2 is designed to be the one benchmark you cannot pretrain your way past, a set of visual reasoning puzzles where each task needs a rule inferred from a handful of examples rather than a fact recalled from training. That makes it a cleaner test of reasoning than the saturated coding and science suites, and it also makes it brutally expensive, because the models that score well spend a lot of reasoning tokens to get there. We compare GPT-5.6 Sol, Gemini 3.5 Pro, and Grok 4.5 on both axes that matter: how many tasks they solve, and what each solved task costs.

Going global on Shopify Plus is not one decision, it is a fork with three branches. You can run every market from a single store with Shopify Markets, stand up a separate store per region, or build a custom internationalization layer that treats Shopify as one of several backends. Each puts currency, tax, inventory, and catalog truth in a different place, and each fails differently as you add markets. We compare the three on where truth lives, what the integration costs, and the migration path when you outgrow the option you started with.
Jul 14, 2026 / AI Engineering Unified memory is the reason Apple Silicon runs big models at all, and it is also the reason a build that ran fine yesterday hangs today. The model weights, the KV cache, and whatever else your machine is doing all draw from one pool, and once the total crosses the wired limit the system starts swapping to disk. When that happens decode does not degrade gracefully, it falls off a cliff. We measured where the cliff sits on a 64GB M5 Max, why the KV cache is usually the thing that pushes you over, and how to size a model so you never reach it.
Jul 13, 2026 / Local Inference
The moment a local backend needs more than one model, a small router to triage requests and a big model to answer them, the M5 Max stops being a single model box and becomes a memory budgeting problem. Unified memory is shared between every resident model, the KV cache, and the OS, so the real question is not which model is fastest but how many you can keep hot before context headroom collapses. We measured resident footprints, swap latency between models, and the crossover where keeping two models loaded beats swapping on demand.
