We've been building with both. Here's what we've learned.
How They Actually Work
Claude Cowork runs inside the Claude desktop app. You grant it access to a folder, and it can read, edit, and create files within that directory. Cowork's model is direct access. It doesn't simulate using your computer. It operates on your files and connected tools through native integrations. When it edits a document, it's writing bytes to disk. When it pulls data from Google Drive, it's calling an API.
Perplexity Computer is a different animal entirely. It's a general purpose autonomous system, part agent, part infrastructure. The Personal Computer tier runs on a dedicated Mac mini connected to Perplexity's servers, operating 24/7 as a digital proxy. It can access your local apps, files, and tools from any device. The Enterprise tier connects to Snowflake, Salesforce, HubSpot, and hundreds of other platforms through app connectors.
Computer's model is autonomous orchestration. When it hits a problem, it spins up sub agents to solve it. It can research supplemental information, find API keys, write code if it needs to, and check in with you only when it's truly stuck. Perplexity claims their Enterprise version completed 3.25 years of work in four weeks for one customer.

Where Cowork Wins
Precision and Control
Cowork's direct file access means there's no ambiguity in what it's doing. When it edits a file, you get the exact change, not a simulated mouse click on a text editor that may or may not have landed on the right line. The plan and execute model with human checkpoints means you stay in the loop. For teams that need to review and approve work before it ships, this matters.
Cowork excels at scoped, focused work: "Take this folder of research notes and produce a structured report." "Update these twelve markdown files to follow a new template." "Draft a presentation from the Q1 data in this spreadsheet." The constraints are the feature, a well defined sandbox with clear inputs and outputs.
Simplicity
There's no infrastructure to manage. No dedicated hardware. No always on Mac mini. You open the Claude app, point it at a folder, and start working. Where Perplexity Computer Wins
Autonomous Scale
Computer is designed for workflows that would be impractical for a human to supervise step by step. Cowork's checkpoint model is slower but safer. You trade throughput for confidence. For high stakes work like legal documents, financial analysis, and production infrastructure, that trade off often favors Cowork.
Scope vs Depth
Computer tries to do everything. Cowork tries to do specific things well. There's a real question of whether a general purpose agent that operates your entire machine is better than a focused agent that deeply understands files, documents, and a curated set of integrations. Generality is powerful but introduces surface area for failure. Focus is limiting but reliable.
Cost and Complexity
Computer requires Perplexity Max ($20/month at minimum) and the Personal Computer tier involves dedicated hardware. The Enterprise tier is priced for large organizations. We've been testing Perplexity Computer for longer horizon research and cross platform data work. The autonomous capabilities are genuinely impressive, but we've also had sessions where the agent went down a path that required significant course correction. The trust model is different: you're delegating more, which means you need to be comfortable with the agent's judgment.
Both products are early. Both will get significantly better. The architectures are different enough that the winner isn't going to be determined by features. It's going to be determined by which workflow model matches how your team actually works.
